We can't currently do this though.

Paul has a patch intended to allow us to do this, but it's not been
accepted upstream.

So in the short term we either have to have some other approach, or we
have to use a customized version of repo.

If you don't want to use a patched repo, then what's the alternative
approach that we will use until a fix has been accepted upstream?
