Thanks Daniel!  I tried both 7.5 and 11.2 compilers and they both respond the same way if I use my .config (system is slow to boot and eventually get a crash).  If I use Dmitry's ATT84753.config as the .config, the system boots ok (slow to boot, no crash) for either compiled version of the kernel.

If you require a gcc-11 cross-compiler see:

If you are curious Linaro gcc was discontinued four years ago and
replaced by the GNU-A toolchain from Arm (this was an agreed plan
between Linaro and Arm... GNU-A is the planned successor). In fact GNU
A was recently been unified with the GNU-RM toolchain and was renamed
to the Arm GNU toolchain (and is what I link to above).
