Just see following description about the android 5.0 release, seems make sense for understanding about the rN tag.

The builds/tags released thus far are as follows:

LRX21L / android-5.0.0_r1 was for Nexus 9 (volantis), obsoleted by LRX21Q. LRX21M / android-5.0.0_r2 is for Nexus Player (fugu). LRX21O / android-5.0.0_r3 is for Nexus 5 (hammerhead). LRX21P / android-5.0.0_r4 is for Nexus 7 (flo/grouper) and Nexus 10 (manta). LRX21Q / android-5.0.0_r5 is for Nexus 9 (volantis).
