Kevin,
iirc, these boot into an initrd. If so, are the errors below an artifact of the boot farm?
Gregory, Thomas, Ezequiel,
If these are legitimate errors, can you please take a look and tell me if anything needs backported?

Weird. I don't think anything has changed in terms of initrd handling recently, at least nothing specific to mvebu platforms. I remember discussing some U-Boot configuration tips at ELC with Kevin. Maybe he has changed his boot scripts/configurations a bit and it breaks on these platforms now? I'd like to hear from Kevin about this.
Also, it's unrelated, but I find the IPMI driver a bit annoying:

It apparently pokes into random register areas. Seems weird and not very pleasant.

Yes, I noticed that as well. It seemed unrelated to the failure, so I didn't mention it. I'll fire off a separate email.

These are long standing boot failures that I had blacklisted from boot testing on stable, but in shuffling some things around, my blacklist got removed.
The problem here on the mvebu platforms is that the multi_v7_defconfig in v3.10.y is missing some kconfig options for using a bootloader-loaded initramfs. Specifically:
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_INITRD=y CONFIG_ARM_ATAG_DTB_COMPAT=y
Also for the buildroot initramfs I use, I need:
CONFIG_DEVTMPFS=y CONFIG_DEVTMPFS_MOUNT=y
These have been in multi_v7_defconfig s since v3.12 I think, but missing from v3.10, which was the early days of multi_v7_defconfig anyways.
Someone needs to submit a patch to stable for this to get this working, or maybe I should just stop booting multi_v7_defconfig on v3.10.
Kevin
Kevin,
Here's the list of patches:

Well, the question I have now: how far along was the multi_v7 effort at v3.10? Was a multi_v7 v3.10 kernel actually usable, assuming the config options were set properly?
If it wasn't then yeah, lets stop booting v3.10 multi_v7. If it was, then I'll put together the email to stable for the patches to be backported.
thx,
Jason.

It's usable for the very basic boot to initramfs that my board farm is doing, but it's probably not usable for any "real" usecase. For that, I suspect a bunch more defconfig backports would probably be needed.

The more I think about it, these probably don't really qualify as stable material, since we probably shouldn't pretend that multi_v7_defconfig is "stable" and really usable on v3.10 anyways.

It appears to be unrelated to the failure this original message was about. However, the failure brought the above to our attention. :)
Is the IPMI driver used on ARM? Documentation/IPMI.txt indicates a dependency on ACPI, but that isn't reflected in the Kconfig. At any rate, it seems rather unhappy. :(
thx,
Jason.
You probably don't have an IPMI controller on your system. You can just remove the driver from the config. Kernel 3.15 will have the default probing removed, and you won't see these messages any more.

thx,
Jason.
Corey,

You probably don't have an IPMI controller on your system. You can just remove the driver from the config. Kernel 3.15 will have the default probing removed, and you won't see these messages any more.
ahh, here it is:
0dfe6e7ed47f ipmi: Turn off default probing of interfaces
Since Arnd says it's possible to have this hardware on an ARM platform, I think backporting this fix may be appropriate.
Although, it looks like the only ARM defconfig that selects this driver is mini2440_defconfig. So I'm uncertain how it gets turned on in multi_v7_defconfig, particularly for the v3.10.y stable tree...
thx,
Jason.

It certainly can be used, and it can be probed through a known PC-style port number or through the DT binding.
However, we don't normally want it to try the PC style addresses, which appear to be used in this case. This should only happen if CONFIG_IPMI_SI_PROBE_DEFAULTS is set, as far as I can tell. Is that set in your configuration?

It's not set in multi_v7_defconfig, which is the config this failed under. At least not on linux-3.10.y.
Kevin, do you still have the full config from this build? Could you send us the IPMI related settings?
thx,

It appears to be unrelated to the failure this original message was about. However, the failure brought the above to our attention.
Is the IPMI driver used on ARM? Documentation/IPMI.txt indicates a dependency on ACPI, but that isn't reflected in the Kconfig. At any rate, it seems rather unhappy. :(
It certainly can be used, and it can be probed through a known PC-style port number or through the DT binding.
Oops, I was wrong. Not sure what happened to my grep-fu, but it is clearly set in multi_v7_defconfig in linux-3.10.y.
Kevin, do you still have the full config from this build? Could you send us the IPMI related settings?
Below is the .config used for the multi_v7_defconfig build of v3.10.39
Awesome, thanks. That confirms I was wrong :)
On a broader topic, if we have users in the field running v3.10.y on ARM systems, then I think it's worth backporting the defconfig changes to boot-test those systems.
I'll see if I can generate a list of patches.
thx,
Jason.
