Bug: Performance regression in 1013af4f585f: mm/hugetlb: fix huge_pmd_unshare() vs GUP-fast race

Hello. We have observed a huge latency increase using `fork()` after ingesting the CVE-2025-38085 fix which leads to the commit `1013af4f585f: mm/hugetlb: fix huge_pmd_unshare() vs GUP-fast race`. On large machines with 1.5TB of memory with 196 cores, we identified mmapping of 1.2TB of shared memory and forking itself dozens or hundreds of times we see a increase of execution times of a factor of 4. The reproducer is at the end of the email. Comparing the a kernel without this patch with a kernel with this patch applied when spawning 1000 children we see those execution times: Patched kernel: $ time make stress ... real 0m11.275s user 0m0.177s sys 0m23.905s Original kernel : $ time make stress ...real 0m2.475s user 0m1.398s sys 0m2.501s The patch in question: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git/commit/?id… My observation/assumption is: each child touches 100 random pages and despawns on each despawn `huge_pmd_unshare()` is called each call to `huge_pmd_unshare()` syncrhonizes all threads using `tlb_remove_table_sync_one()` leading to the regression I'm happy to provide more information. To avoid copying LBRs between VMCB01 and VMCB02 on every nested transition, the current implementation switches between using VMCB01 or VMCB02 as the source of truth for the LBRs while L2 is running. If L2 enables LBR, VMCB02 is used as the source of truth. When L2 disables LBR, the LBRs are copied to VMCB01 and VMCB01 is used as the source of truth. This introduces significant complexity, and incorrect behavior in some cases. For example, on a nested #VMEXIT, the LBRs are only copied from VMCB02 to VMCB01 if LBRV is enabled in VMCB01. This is because L2's writes to MSR_IA32_DEBUGCTLMSR to enable LBR are intercepted and propagated to VMCB01 instead of VMCB02. However, LBRV is only enabled in VMCB02 when L2 is running. This means that if L2 enables LBR and exits to L1, the LBRs will not be propagated from VMCB02 to VMCB01, because LBRV is disabled in VMCB01. There is no meaningful difference in CPUID rate in L2 when copying LBRs on every nested transition vs. the current approach, so do the simple and correct thing and always copy LBRs between VMCB01 and VMCB02 on nested transitions (when LBRV is disabled by L1). Drop the conditional LBRs copying in __svm_{enable/disable}_lbrv() as it is now unnecessary. VMCB02 becomes the only source of truth for LBRs when L2 is running, regardless of LBRV being enabled by L1, drop svm_get_lbr_vmcb() and use svm->vmcb directly in its place. This patch fixes two issues: 1. In vrealloc, we were missing the KASAN_VMALLOC_VM_ALLOC flag when unpoisoning the extended region. This flag is required to correctly associate the allocation with KASAN's vmalloc tracking. Note: In contrast, vzalloc (via __vmalloc_node_range_noprof) explicitly sets KASAN_VMALLOC_VM_ALLOC and calls kasan_unpoison_vmalloc() with it. vrealloc must behave consistently �� especially when reusing existing vmalloc regions �� to ensure KASAN can track allocations correctly. 2. When vrealloc reuses an existing vmalloc region (without allocating new pages), KASAN previously generated a new tag, which broke tag-based memory access tracking. We now add a 'reuse_tag' parameter to __kasan_unpoison_vmalloc() to preserve the original tag in such cases. A new helper kasan_unpoison_vralloc() is introduced to handle this reuse scenario, ensuring consistent tag behavior during reallocation. [PATCH 6.1] softirq: Add trace points for tasklet entry/exit

commit f4bf3ca2e5cba655824b6e0893a98dfb33ed24e5 upstream. Tasklets are supposed to finish their work quickly and should not block the current running process, but it is not guaranteed that they do so. Currently softirq_entry/exit can be used to analyse the total tasklets execution time, but that's not helpful to track individual tasklets execution time. That makes it hard to identify tasklet functions, which take more time than expected. Add tasklet_entry/exit trace point support to track individual tasklet execution. Avoids OOB access in fbcon_remap_all(). Without holding the console lock the call races with switching outputs. VGA switcheroo calls fbcon_remap_all() when switching clients. The fbcon function uses struct fb_info.node, which is set by register_framebuffer(). As the fb-helper code currently sets up VGA switcheroo before registering the framebuffer, the value of node is -1 and therefore not a legal value. For example, fbcon uses the value within set_con2fb_map() [1] as an index into an array. Moving vga_switcheroo_client_fb_set() after register_framebuffer() can result in VGA switching that does not switch fbcon correctly. Therefore move vga_switcheroo_client_fb_set() under fbcon_fb_registered(), which already holds the console lock. Fbdev calls fbcon_fb_registered() from within register_framebuffer(). Serializes the helper with VGA switcheroo's call to fbcon_remap_all(). Although vga_switcheroo_client_fb_set() takes an instance of struct fb_info as parameter, it really only needs the contained fbcon state. Moving the call to fbcon initialization is therefore cleaner than before. Only amdgpu, i915, nouveau and radeon support vga_switcheroo. For all other drivers, this change does nothing. [PATCH v2 1/2] kasan: Refactor pcpu kasan vmalloc unpoison

It was reported on arm64 and reproduced on x86. It can be explained in the following points: 1. There can be more than one virtual memory chunk. 2. Chunk's base address has a tag. 3. The base address points at the first chunk and thus inherits the tag of the first chunk. 4. The subsequent chunks will be accessed with the tag from the first chunk. 5. Thus, the subsequent chunks need to have their tag set to match that of the first chunk. Refactor code by reusing __kasan_unpoison_vmalloc in a new helper in preparation for the actual fix. [PATCH] comedi: Fix getting range information for subdevices 16 to 255

The `COMEDI_RANGEINFO` ioctl does not work properly for subdevice indices above 15. Currently, the only in-tree COMEDI drivers that support more than 16 subdevices are the "8255" driver and the "comedi_bond" driver. Making the ioctl work for subdevice indices up to 255 is achievable. It needs minor changes to the handling of the `COMEDI_RANGEINFO` and `COMEDI_CHANINFO` ioctls that should be mostly harmless to user-space, apart from making them less broken. Details follow... The `COMEDI_RANGEINFO` ioctl command gets the list of supported ranges (usually with units of volts or milliamps) for a COMEDI subdevice or channel. (Only some subdevices have per-channel range tables, indicated by the `SDF_RANGETYPE` flag in the subdevice information.) It uses a `range_type` value and a user-space pointer, both supplied by user-space, but the `range_type` value should match what was obtained using the `COMEDI_CHANINFO` ioctl (if the subdevice has per-channel range tables) or `COMEDI_SUBDINFO` ioctl (if the subdevice uses a single range table for all channels). Bits 15 to 0 of the `range_type` value contain the length of the range table, which is the only part that user-space should care about (so it can use a suitably sized buffer to fetch the range table). Bits 23 to 16 store the channel index, which is assumed to be no more than 255 if the subdevice has per-channel range tables, and is set to 0 if the subdevice has a single range table. For `range_type` values produced by the `COMEDI_SUBDINFO` ioctl, bits 31 to 24 contain the subdevice index, which is assumed to be no more than 255. But for `range_type` values produced by the `COMEDI_CHANINFO` ioctl, bits 27 to 24 contain the subdevice index, which is assumed to be no more than 15, and bits 31 to 28 contain the COMEDI device's minor device number for some unknown reason lost in the mists of time. The `COMEDI_RANGEINFO` ioctl extract the length from bits 15 to 0 of the user-supplied `range_type` value, extracts the channel index from bits 23 to 16 (only used if the subdevice has per-channel range tables), extracts the subdevice index from bits 27 to 24, and ignores bits 31 to 28. So for subdevice indices 16 to 255, the `COMEDI_SUBDINFO` or `COMEDI_CHANINFO` ioctl will report a `range_type` value that doesn't work with the `COMEDI_RANGEINFO` ioctl. It will either get the range table for the subdevice index modulo 16, or will fail with `-EINVAL`. To fix this, always use bits 31 to 24 of the `range_type` value to hold the subdevice index (assumed to be no more than 255). This affects the `COMEDI_CHANINFO` and `COMEDI_RANGEINFO` ioctls. There should not be anything in user-space that depends on the old, broken usage, although it may now see different values in bits 31 to 28 of the `range_type` values reported by the `COMEDI_CHANINFO` ioctl for subdevices that have per-channel subdevices. User-space should not be trying to decode bits 31 to 16 of the `range_type` values anyway.
