[PATCH V5] mm, compaction: don't use ALLOC_CMA in long term GUP flow

From: yangge <yangge1116(a)126.com> Since commit 984fdba6a32e ("mm, compaction: use proper alloc_flags in __compaction_suitable()") allow compaction to proceed when free pages required for compaction reside in the CMA pageblocks, it's possible that __compaction_suitable() always returns true, and in some cases, it's not acceptable. There are 4 NUMA nodes on my machine, and each NUMA node has 32GB of memory. I have configured 16GB of CMA memory on each NUMA node, and starting a 32GB virtual machine with device passthrough is extremely slow, taking almost an hour. During the start-up of the virtual machine, it will call pin_user_pages_remote(..., FOLL_LONGTERM, ...) to allocate memory. Long term GUP cannot allocate memory from CMA area, so a maximum of 16 GB of no-CMA memory on a NUMA node can be used as virtual machine memory. Since there is 16G of free CMA memory on the NUMA node, watermark for order-0 always be met for compaction, so __compaction_suitable() always returns true, even if the node is unable to allocate non-CMA memory for the virtual machine. For costly allocations, because __compaction_suitable() always returns true, __alloc_pages_slowpath() can't exit at the appropriate place, resulting in excessively long virtual machine startup times. [stable-kernel][5.15.y][PATCH 0/5] Fix a regression on sc16is7xx

Recently we found the fifo_read() and fifo_write() are broken in our 5.15 kernel after rebase to the latest 5.15.y, the 5.15.y integrated the commit e635f652696e ("serial: sc16is7xx: convert from _raw_ to _noinc_ regmap functions for FIFO"), but it forgot to integrate a prerequisite commit 3837a0379533 ("serial: sc16is7xx: improve regmap debugfs by using one regmap per port"). And about the prerequisite commit, there are also 4 commits to fix it, So in total, I backported 5 patches to 5.15.y to fix this regression. 0002-xxx and 0004-xxx could be cleanly applied to 5.15.y, the remaining 3 patches need to resolve some conflict. [PATCH 4/4] tracing: Check "%s" dereference via the field and not the TP_printk format

From: Steven Rostedt <rostedt(a)goodmis.org> The TP_printk() portion of a trace event is executed at the time a event is read from the trace. This can happen seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, years possibly later since the event was recorded. If the print format contains a dereference to a string via "%s", and that string was allocated, there's a chance that string could be freed before it is read by the trace file. To protect against such bugs, there are two functions that verify the event. The first one is test_event_printk(), which is called when the event is created. It reads the TP_printk() format as well as its arguments to make sure nothing may be dereferencing a pointer that was not copied into the ring buffer along with the event. If it is, it will trigger a WARN_ON(). For strings that use "%s", it is not so easy. The string may not reside in the ring buffer but may still be valid. Strings that are static and part of the kernel proper which will not be freed for the life of the running system, are safe to dereference. But to know if it is a pointer to a static string or to something on the heap can not be determined until the event is triggered. This brings us to the second function that tests for the bad dereferencing of strings, trace_check_vprintf(). It would walk through the printf format looking for "%s", and when it finds it, it would validate that the pointer is safe to read. If not, it would produces a WARN_ON() as well and write into the ring buffer "[UNSAFE-MEMORY]". The problem with this is how it used va_list to have vsnprintf() handle all the cases that it didn't need to check. Instead of re-implementing vsnprintf(), it would make a copy of the format up to the %s part, and call vsnprintf() with the current va_list ap variable, where the ap would then be ready to point at the string in question. For architectures that passed va_list by reference this was possible. For architectures that passed it by copy it was not. A test_can_verify() function was used to differentiate between the two, and if it wasn't possible, it would disable it. Even for architectures where this was feasible, it was a stretch to rely on such a method that is undocumented, and could cause issues later on with new optimizations of the compiler. Instead, the first function test_event_printk() was updated to look at "%s" as well. If the "%s" argument is a pointer outside the event in the ring buffer, it would find the field type of the event that is the problem and mark the structure with a new flag called "needs_test". The event itself will be marked by TRACE_EVENT_FL_TEST_STR to let it be known that this event has a field that needs to be verified before the event can be printed using the printf format. When the event fields are created from the field type structure, the fields would copy the field type's "needs_test" value. Finally, before being printed, a new function ignore_event() is called which will check if the event has the TEST_STR flag set (if not, it returns false). If the flag is set, it then iterates through the events fields looking for the ones that have the "needs_test" flag set. Then it uses the offset field from the field structure to find the pointer in the ring buffer event. It runs the tests to make sure that pointer is safe to print and if not, it triggers the WARN_ON() and also adds to the trace output that the event in question has an unsafe memory access. The ignore_event() makes the trace_check_vprintf() obsolete so it is removed. [PATCH 3/4] tracing: Add "%s" check in test_event_printk()

From: Steven Rostedt <rostedt(a)goodmis.org> The test_event_printk() code makes sure that when a trace event is registered, any dereferenced pointers in from the event's TP_printk() are pointing to content in the ring buffer. But currently it does not handle "%s", as there's cases where the string pointer saved in the ring buffer points to a static string in the kernel that will never be freed. As that is a valid case, the pointer needs to be checked at runtime. Currently the runtime check is done via trace_check_vprintf(), but to not have to replicate everything in vsnprintf() it does some logic with the va_list that may not be reliable across architectures. In order to get rid of that logic, more work in the test_event_printk() needs to be done. Some of the strings can be validated at this time when it is obvious the string is valid because the string will be saved in the ring buffer content. Do all the validation of strings in the ring buffer at boot in test_event_printk(), and make sure that the field of the strings that point into the kernel are accessible. This will allow adding checks at runtime that will validate the fields themselves and not rely on paring the TP_printk() format at runtime. [PATCH 2/4] tracing: Add missing helper functions in event pointer dereference check

[PATCH 1/4] tracing: Fix test_event_printk() to process entire print argument

The function needs to accurately go from one print format argument to the next. It handles quotes and parenthesis that may be included in an argument. When it finds the start of the next argument, it uses a simple "c = strstr(fmt + i, ',')" to find the end of that argument! In order to include "%s" dereferencing, it needs to process the entire content of the print format argument and not just the content of the first ',' it finds. [PATCH] KVM: arm64: Ignore PMCNTENSET_EL0 while checking for overflow status

DDI0487K.a D13.3.1 describes the PMU overflow condition, which evaluates to true if any counter's global enable (PMCR_EL0.E), overflow flag (PMOVSSET_EL0[n]), and interrupt enable (PMINTENSET_EL1[n]) are all 1. Of note, this does not require a counter to be enabled (i.e. PMCNTENSET_EL0[n] = 1) to generate an overflow. Align kvm_pmu_overflow_status() with the reality of the architecture and stop using PMCNTENSET_EL0 as part of the overflow condition. The bug was discovered while running an SBSA PMU test [*], which only sets PMCR.E, PMOVSSET<0>, PMINTENSET<0>, and expects an overflow interrupt. ext4 damage suspected in between 5.15.167 - 5.15.170

Hi, This is to report that after jumping from generic kernel 5.15.167 to 5.15.170 I apparently observe ext4 damage. After some few days of regular daily use of 5.15.170, one morning my ext4 partition refused to mount complaining about corrupted system area (-117). There were no unusual events preceding this. The device in question is a laptop with healthy battery, also connected to AC permanently. The laptop is privately owned by me, in daily use at home, so I am 100% aware of everything happening with it. The filesystem in question lives on md raid1 with very assymmetric members (ssd+hdd) so one would not possibly expect that in the event of emergency cpu halt or some other abnormal stop while filesystem was actively writing data, raid members could stay in perfect sync. After the incident, I've run raid1 check multiple times and run memtest multiple times from different boot media and certainly consulted startctl. Nothing. No issues whatsoever except for this spontaneous ext4 damage. Looking at git log for ext4 changes between 5.15.167 and 5.15.170 shows a few commits. All landed in 5.15.168. Interestingly, one of them is a comeback of the (in)famous 91562895f803 "properly sync file size update after O_SYNC ..." which caused some blowup 1 year ago due to "subtle interaction". I've no idea if 91562895f803 is related to damage this time or not, but most definitely it looks like some problem was introduced between 5.15.167 and 5.15.170 anyway. And because there are apparently 0 commits to ext4 in 5.15 since 5.15.168 at the moment, I thought I'd report.
