Just a note that I just pushed out commit e181ae0c5db9 ("mm: zero unavailable pages before memmap init") that fixes the nasty VM crash issue I had, and that apparently the Fedora people have also seen in the wild in 4.17.4.
The commit that triggered this didn't make it in until 4.18-rc3, but it has apparently already been back-ported to stable, so now the fix needs to be back-ported too.
