Our autobuilds for ia64 fail for 6.6.145-rc2 (actually already for -rc1 but -rc2 was released before I could respond):
``` drivers/cpufreq/ia64-acpi-cpufreq.c:329:27: error: initialization of 'void (*)(struct cpufreq_policy *)' from incompatible pointer type 'int (*)(struct cpufreq_policy *)' [-Wincompatible-pointer-types] 329 | .exit = acpi_cpufreq_cpu_exit, | ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ drivers/cpufreq/ia64-acpi-cpufreq.c:329:27: note: (near initialization for 'acpi_cpufreq_driver.exit') ```
See [1].
This is due to the addition of an upstream change to drivers/cpufreq/[...]` ([2]). As this change was introduced after v6.6, it didn't change the ia64 specific driver that is still present for linux-6.6.y.
In our fork of Linux post v6.6 we carry a replay of b4b1ddc that makes the corresponding changes also for ia64. This is available on [3] (and also attached to this message) and fixes the build for me.
Can this be included for linux-6.6.y, so it continues to build for ia64 as is?
Cheers, Frank
Sure, I'll queue it up. Does anyone still actually use ia64 anymore? I thought those systems were long dead.
I have been doing various experiments with the architecture in the past 5 years, and co-maintaining an out-of-tree patchset for the past 3 years. This patch also originally comes from there [1] - that's why it has my signoff, too.
[somehow the mailing list seems not to have accepted that, trying git send-email through kernel.org server next...]
...I did not notice the fork was already mentioned in the thread, sorry! To elaborate: we have a small community and had quite a few updates recently. I ported Rust/LLVM to ia64 in the past two months [1], someone else has an experimental branch for re-added Altix support in the SGI hobbyist community even with graphics (and KDE Plasma) [2], and we have at least a few other users on the T2 Linux Discord server and elsewhere.
It's nothing like mainstream interest, maybe roughly comparable to PA-RISC, but it's not dead either, and interest might grow as more machines will go out of production and enter the second-hand marked following the recent discontinuation of (at least base level) HP-UX and HP Integrity support.
Thanks a lot. That should fix our builds.
Dead, no, not at all, maybe left for dead before we took over in 2023. But still there were always people taking care of it in the years before - keeping it alive for us. Much obliged for that. And today things look vastly different compared to 2023. Tomas already mentioned a few things, but let me add a few more:
Today we have it all: distributions that support ia64 (T2, EPIC Slack, Afterglow), hardware and simulator support restored, software support restored (e.g. Ruby, compilers and more, other things maybe only a session with an LLM away), Tomas doing all sorts of optimization work that wasn't done in years, other devs bringing in patches for various bits of the ecosystem. And just recently out of nowhere ia64 emulators popped up, one of it being QEMU based ([1]), currently emulating an Itanium 2 system, with MP support and already working well enough for MP package builds. There is now even another emulator that tries to recreate a Merced based system ([2]).
[1]: https://github.com/syunnPC/qemu-system-ia64/
[2]: https://github.com/hotlandsoftware/gemu/
Please excuse my optimism here, but emulators with MP support will bring in a lot more people, the scarce hardware failed to bring in so far.
Of course we are hobbyists, we're doing it for the fun of it. If you want to learn more, please head over to:
Cool, but what happens when these last kernels with support for the platform goes end-of-life? While running things in emulators is fun, how will future userspace code that needs newer kernel features ever be possible?
Actually it is already possible:
Our autobuilder built and builds all current stable kernel versions. The post 6.6 ones with patches on top (see e.g. [1]), like for mainline. The stable kernels are also run-tested with Ski, which only requires a few extra patches post linux-4.19.y depending on version ([2]). Also we follow glibc and make it "work" for us ([3]).
[1]: https://github.com/linux-ia64/linux-stable-rc/tree/__mirror/patches
[2]: https://github.com/linux-ia64/ski/tree/hp-sim-for-linux
[3]: https://github.com/linux-ia64/glibc-ia64/
I hope I can get qemu-system-ia64 working in GHA in the future, so we can also run-test non-Ski kernels there.
Mainline is also tested weekly (most of the time) on real hardware ([4]). So stable kernels post 6.6 always start in a working state. I believe I even tested the older ones at least once on real hardware, too.
BPF selftests compilation is currently broken. But with [1] applied it will build, with test_progs, test_progs-no_alu32, test_progs-cpuv4, test_maps, test_verifier in BPF selftests all passes[2] on x86_64 and aarch64.
Hmm, I would swear that `git cherry-pick $6-12-commit` in 6.6 worked when I tried. Maybe I got the wrong tree.
Will resend one specifically for 6.6.y, sorry for the hassle.
BPF selftests compilation is currently broken. But with [1] applied it will build, with test_progs, test_progs-no_alu32, test_progs-cpuv4, test_maps, test_verifier in BPF selftests all passes[2] on x86_64 and aarch64.
Ok, I'll go queue those up for 6.12.y and 6.6.y now, thanks!
As I said on the thread for those patches, they only applied to 6.12.y, so 6.6 will remain as-is for now :(
Hmm, I would swear that `git cherry-pick $6-12-commit` in 6.6 worked when I tried. Maybe I got the wrong tree.
Seem like git figured out tools/testing/shared/linux/idr.h used to be called tools/testing/radix-tree/linux/idr.h during cherry pick and handled the change itself. I didn't realize it does that.
Lesson learned, I'll test with 'git am' in the future.
Will resend one specifically for 6.6.y, sorry for the hassle.
Looks like I'm seeing the same proc read kselftest issue as I am on v6.12, the bisect is still running though.
Just like rc1, rc2 builds, boots and works fine on my 2-socket Ivy Bridge Xeon E5-2697 v2 server. No dmesg oddities or regressions found.
