The current kunit execution model is to provide base kunit functionality and tests built-in to the kernel. The aim of this series is to allow building kunit itself and tests as modules. This in turn allows a simple form of selective execution; load the module you wish to test. In doing so, kunit itself (if also built as a module) will be loaded as an implicit dependency.
Because this requires a core API modification - if a module delivers multiple suites, they must be declared with the kunit_test_suites() macro - we're proposing this patch set as a candidate to be applied to the test tree before too many kunit consumers appear. We attempt to deal with existing consumers in patch 3.

o export the required symbols in kunit o string-stream tests utilize non-exported symbols so for now we skip building them when CONFIG_KUNIT_TEST=m. o support a new way of declaring test suites. Because a module cannot do multiple late_initcall()s, we provide a kunit_test_suites() macro to declare multiple suites within the same module at once. o some test module names would have been too general ("test-test" and "example-test" for kunit tests, "inode-test" for ext4 tests); rename these as appropriate ("kunit-test", "kunit-example-test" and "ext4-inode-test" respectively).

I do have one question, out of curiosity --- for people who aren't using UML to run Kunit tests, and are either running the kunit tests during boot, or when the module is loaded, is there the test framework to automatically extract the test reports out of dmesg?
I can boot a kernel with kunit tests enabled using kvm, and I see it splatted intermixed with the rest of the kernel boot messages. This is how I tested the 32-bit ext4 inode test fix. But I had to manually find the test output. Is that the expected way people are supposed to be using Kunit tests w/o using UML and the python runner?

For now, yes. We do not currently have a piece that extracts the test reports; however, we are planning on pulling that bit out of tools/testing/kunit/; we just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Looks like Brendan's got something coming to resolve this; I've also got a patch that I was hoping to send out soon that might help. The idea is that each test suite would create a debugfs representation under /sys/kernel/debug/kunit; specifically:
/sys/kernel/debug/kunit/results/<suite> /sys/kernel/debug/kunit/results/<suite>-tests
...where cat'ing the former shows the full set of results, and the latter is a directory within which we can display individual test results in test-case-specific files.
This is all done by ensuring that when tests log information, they log to a per-test-case log buffer as well as to dmesg.

I confess I'd only been thinking about supporting the case of a user modprobe-ing a kunit test suite module directly and wanting a clean set of results separated from other dmesg output. However the scheme you describe does seem workable for the UML case also. With the late_initcalls the builtin kunit suites will likely run early in boot but perhaps we could tweak the semantics such that the full results debugfs file is not populated until the tests have run to simplify script-based probing. I'll try some experiments with the debugfs patch once it's ready. Thanks!

In discussion of how to handle timeouts, it was noted that if sysctl_hung_task_timeout_seconds is exceeded for a kunit test, the test task will be killed and an oops generated. This should suffice as a means of debugging such timeout issues for now.
Hence remove use of sysctl_hung_task_timeout_secs, which has the added benefit of avoiding the need to export that symbol from the core kernel.

Making kunit itself buildable as a module allows for "always-on" kunit configuration; specifying CONFIG_KUNIT=m means the module is built but only used when loaded. Kunit test modules will load kunit.ko as an implicit dependency, so simply running "modprobe my-kunit-tests" will load the tests along with the kunit module and run them.

Making kunit itself buildable as a module allows for "always-on" kunit configuration; specifying CONFIG_KUNIT=m means the module is built but only used when loaded. Kunit test modules will load kunit.ko as an implicit dependency, so simply running "modprobe my-kunit-tests" will load the tests along with the kunit module and run them.

The current kunit execution model is to provide base kunit functionality and tests built-in to the kernel. The aim of this series is to allow building kunit itself and tests as modules. This in turn allows a simple form of selective execution; load the module you wish to test. In doing so, kunit itself (if also built as a module) will be loaded as an implicit dependency.
Because this requires a core API modification - if a module delivers multiple suites, they must be declared with the kunit_test_suites() macro - we're proposing this patch set as a candidate to be applied to the test tree before too many kunit consumers appear. We attempt to deal with existing consumers in patch 3.
