Sorry I was wondering if this was happening/agenda, and just saw this. Next time.
I do hope that fwup can play a role in firmware update. We plan to try this out with Chrome OS AP update (and VBE).
Re disabling the command line, U-Boot has a 'bootsecure' thing in the devicetree which allows disabling the command line, either in the build or from a prior stage. If this is generally useful we could add it to the generic /options node perhaps.

U-Boot has parameters in the “env” (MAC addresses, part number, board name…) and in a control dTB that we can pass through NT_FW_CONFIG when doing in TFA. What shall be the decision criteria to put one parameter in one or the other mechanism?

Absolutely. There has been some work already done with fwupd and LVFS to make firmware update seamless.
