Yes, they are identical from a user space point of view.
If you can elaborate a bit more in the commit log so to mention that this implementation will be adapted to work on top of the clock API once the later is merged upstream that would be nice.

BTW, the implementation based on common clk struct had also been finished and reviewed with Jeremy.
Please add that info to the patch description as well.
