Ah! Thanks for the tip! I rolled back to the 0803 release and now I'm booting!

Next issue: When using the upstream qemu for testing versatilepb kernels, the smc91x driver loads fine and user networking works without issue.

However, with qemu-maemo the beagle emulation doesn't seem to have any eth devices. Is that just something that's not supported? Or is there a trick to it?
