I looked at your log. I agree with Andy, this is probably not a rebuild the kernel kind of situation.

Does the log really cut off at 1239 lines or is there more?

I'm afraid I don't know how to interpret it.

I stopped lightdm using

# service lightdm stop

and then ran "startx", but the result was the same.

I didn't mess with the run levels because Ubuntu doesn't have a multi-user non-gui run level.
