(originally from Ira; she's having mail trouble for some reason)
Hi,
I am trying to install my new BeagleBoard xM.
I started with https://wiki.linaro.org/Releases/DailyBuilds, but it failed to write to the SD card giving some errors about QEMU (I can try that again if the error messages are important).
Dave Martin also gave me this link https://wiki.linaro.org/Source/ImageInstallation, but it doesn't exist anymore.
So, I tried these instructions: https://wiki.linaro.org/Source/VexpressImageInstallation with http://snapshots.linaro.org/10.11-daily/linaro-headless/20101107/0/images/ta... and http://jameswestby.net:8080/view/Hardware%20Packs/job/linaro-omap3%20hwpack/ (and --dev beagle). The installation of the SD card went ok, but the board doesn't work. During boot I see the printings as in the attached file and it doesn't go any further.
I hope someone can help me with that, because otherwise I am at dead end...
Thanks, Ira

(Actually the mail was held up for moderation because it was too bug; I approved it accidentally thinking she was just using the wrong sender address)

This looks like the system may have booted successfully, and then she's run into bug #652221. Does Alt+F2 pull up a login prompt?
I do recommend having a serial console hooked up somewhere for the beagles - that would sidestep bug #652221 in this case, and is generally useful for troubleshooting.
The suggestions above sound plausible...
Does anyone know where the beagle installation instructions page went?

It's normal to get a lot of "undefined ioctl" messages... I don't know the background to this, but it doesn't indicate failure. If something else went wrong though, it could be useful if you can attach some log output...
Dave Martin also gave me this link https://wiki.linaro.org/Source/ImageInstallation, but it doesn't exist anymore.
I'm pretty sure the link was there before. Now I can't find any installation instructions page for Beagle at all. Does anyone know where it went (and why?)

If you still get problems, it would be useful to see the whole boot log from the serial port.
Note that if you aren't able to connect the serial console for some reason, you can't log in at all on the headless image because root login is disabled and there are no normal user accounts.
You can temporarily work around this if needed by setting the root passwd field to empty in /etc/passwd:
root::0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash
(After logging in, you can use adduser, passwd etc. as you like)

I assume Jamie refactored something. Found that there is now GettingInstallingTesting ...
I am not sure I like the new multi-purpose naming. How about we resurrect Source/ImageInstallation (or under Release/) and <<include ...>> that page in the Releases/GettingInstallingTesting page?

I removed the page as it had outdated information on there that was actually causing people to not be able to install images. I've rolled all that information in to the DailyBuilds (and MileStoneBuilds) pages.

The GettingInstallingTesting page is linked in from the other build pages and should not be used on its own. Its the common part of image building that the other pages use instead of duplicating the information.

OK. I would still love to see a page that you can find in the wiki search box when searching for terms like "image installation" or something along the line. Anyway. thanks for pointing to those pages.

Having said that, last week, being in Olympia, I was "promoting" Linaro images between my colleagues there, and their first question was: Ok, so why there is no "Try me" or "Download" link from neither www.lnaro.org nor main wiki page?
I would, sort of, agree... ;-)
Cheers!

There's a "get started" link on the new http://www.linaro.org/ page.
It could be clearer, but I think it's better than what used to be there.
Any help?
Cheers ---Dave

Oh, it's much better only, if only with the big "Downloads" link on the frontpage :-)
The only thing I could complain now about is that I didn't find any visible link to "how to prepare a card with the image" (I mean "how to use linux-media-create"). But maybe I just missed it somewhere? I looked at the http://www.linaro.org/downloads/ and https://wiki.linaro.org/Releases/1011 pages).
Cheers!
Paweł
PS. The "linux-linaro-2.6.35.git" link on the http://www.linaro.org/downloads/ points to the "next" repo instead of "2.6.35"...
Hi there,
For instructions on obtaining and installing the release, you can visit https://wiki.linaro.org/Releases/1011/Final and click on the link under "Instructions"
There's also now a high-level video walkthrough at http://www.linaro.org/low-cost-development-boards/
All this can be found by following links from "Getting started" on http://www.linaro.org/ ... but I'd agree it's still not as obvious as it could be.
Jamie et al. -- any ideas on how we can make this more straightforward for newcomers?
Cheers ---Dave

Well, can it? ;-)
What I see is that the "Getting started" leads me to the "Downloads" page, then there is this frame on the right side - "Download Linaro for your board", right? The problem is that the link which is given there: "More information on the development release as well as download and installation instructions can be found at: https://wiki.linaro.org/Releases/1011" leads to "/Releases/1011" not to "/Releases/1011/Final"... And as far as I can say there is no link from the former to the latter?
Probably just a mistake?
Cheers!

There is a table at the bottom with all the release pages.
Probably just a mistake?

You were so close. https://wiki.linaro.org/Releases has instructions on how to obtain and use the Linaro images.
I have also asked for a big download link to be prominent on either the linaro.org site or we could add it to the wiki.
Cheers!

Oh sure! Just to be clear - I found it before, searching wiki. But this time I just tried to pretend a fresher - say one of my Olympia colleagues - and follow the big links :-)

And that's exactly what I was talking about - the huge "Downloads" link is great.

Uh, you're right - I found it with Ctrl-F. But not before, even if I knew what I was looking for ;-)
To summarize, if I may suggest anything - changing the "https://wiki.linaro.org/Releases/1011" link on the "Downloads" page so it points directly to "/Releases/1011/Final" would do the job, I believe.

Thats for Michael to do but for the meantime I'll added explicit download links on the https://wiki.linaro.org/Releases/1011 page.

Looks great - probably it's an even better solution than what I suggested before.
