From a quick look, it appears to be doing a similar thing as GEM..
although as a stand-alone driver rather than coupled with display driver (drm).

It does look really close to drivers/gpu/drm except with priority sorted rb_tree heaps and a lot less interop code.

ION is also the name of Nvidia's Atom companion chipset.
